Rickenbacker 4001 in Fireglo! This bass is a true road warrior, exhibiting the
type of wear you’d expect from a bass of this
age and exuding all the vintage vibe and sound of the good ol’ years. The feel of this 4001 is about
as good as it gets. The set up allows for
fingering ease along all 20 frets and her powerful Toaster Top neck pick-up aids in greater tonal flexibility
while the bridge pick-up provides some intense funky bass
response. This 4001’s sound is easily
customizable with the bass and treble volume and
tone knobs as well as a 3-way pick-up
selector. The most notable signs of
gigging use are the few wear spots in various
places on her finish, some buckle rash
on the back, some chipping along
the top of the headstock, and some worn spots along the
neck including some mild splits in the finish at the fretboard. This does not in anyway effect the action of this bass, which plays as smooth as Sangria on a warm summer evening, in part thanks to the recently polished frets which have plenty of life left in them. As a matter of fact, all of these characteristics only seem to add to the allure of her deep red Fireglo. The binding is not as vibrant as it
once was, but instead it has taken on a nice aging and is not separating anywhere. Accompanied with Ric’s classic checkerboard border, the sunburst finish looks terrific in contrast. The hardware still shines with
some barely visible oxidizing here and
there and the tuners at one time were replaced with one screw Schallers. However, that change is hardly noticeable behind the closed back original Grovers! This is a vintage beast that is ready to rock out for many more years. She just needs a new owner to get her
back on stage. Don’t let this seasoned vixen slip away.
Although the serial number on the jack plate tells us that she’s a 1972 model, based on some cosmetic nuances there is a possibility that this is not accurate. It is nearly impossibly to be 100% certain.
