Rickenbacher Lap Steel Guitar – Pre-war Silver Hawaiian Rickenbacker
Description
Pretty nice, clean, and somewhat rare Rickenbacher (old spelling) Silver Hawaiian lap steel guitar. This is a late example produced probably in 1942 when metal supplies were becoming short, but this one still sports the high-sought 1 1/2 width pickup used in all the early Rick steels. The serial number shown is original, though not helpful in dating the guitar. Common knowledge is that the company began using a decal on the headstock when supplues of their metal tag ran out. This soulds phenomenol, and my bud David Lindley used on for a while before he found his beloved bakelite model. This is a well kept example showing no dents and dings in the chromeplated finish, just some lap wear on the back that is shown in one of the pictures. Chrome plate is known to scratch from something as gentle as cleaning with a soft cloth, and this guitar does show the results of a few decades of cleaning. But you can only see these surface markings when turning the guitar into the brightest light. Note that these highly reflective guitars can be difficult to photograph because they pick up when ever is in the distance. Any plack marks in the photos are probably from ther tree limbs in the backyard as I take the photos in natural light for best reproduction. Be aware that the steel itself would be characterized by nearly any vintage dealer as ‘excellent’ condition with no marks other than light normal wear for an instrument that is 70+ years old.
All parts on this guitar are original – the knobs, pots, screws, pickups and housing, nut and bridge. The tuners are original, and the deteriorated buttons received exact replacements for good operation. The pickup has that high lonesome sound so sought by players and collectors. These Rick silver hawaiians are rather rare and pricey on the vintage market. Gruhn’s Guide lists it as ‘aesthetically appealing chrome plated’ instrument. The instrument includes its original hardshell case. That appears to have previously had a couple of padded sections removed form the interior, perhaps to create space for a included accessories (see pic) that include a box of vintage Marwin strings, Black Diamond string box (empty), Dobro brand strings, vintage pitch pipe, finger picks, and two slide bars, all of which are included in the auction.
PRICE: An 8-string model sold recently on ebay for $1900. That was a custom-ordered. The regular silver hawaiians I campared on gbase start well over $1100 and go up from there. Look at this price and pull the trigger fast. It will make you happy and prosperous in the new year.
SHIPPING: Shipping and handling is $49 in continental USA. Anywhere else will be higher, probably much higher so check first. See my other auctions. Thanks.
